The Critical Care Nurses at Mercy are proud to be recognized by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses as the only Gold recipient in Maryland of the Beacon Award for Excellence.
This 8-week Nurse Extern program provides nursing students patient care experiences and an opportunity to perform nursing skills under the direct supervision of an experienced Registered Nurse. Externs become immersed in the collaborative, inter-professional healthcare environment, and meet regularly to discuss hot topics and practice skills. Opportunities are available in all nursing departments.
New graduate nurses participate in an evidence-based 12-month Nurse Residency Program designed to provide personalized support, professional mentorship and informative education. The program provides new graduate nurses individualized attention focusing on opportunities for enhanced clinical competency, leadership skills and continuous professional development.
Based on nursing experience, nurses are encouraged to advance on Mercy’s clinical ladders. Once promotion is achieved, nurses are celebrated with a financial incentive and a meaningful recognition ceremony. Mercy is unique in providing a highly specialized clinical ladder for Operating Rooms.
Mercy nurses have opportunities to embrace Jean Watson’s Caring Theory through a variety of self-care activities such as mindfulness and art therapy. The Caring Cart was instituted to provide on-the-spot restorative practices.
Exemplifying the mission of Mercy, strong structures and processes support Mercy nurses to be active partners within the community. Employees are dedicated to support the community and in-turn community members are strong supporters of Mercy Medical Center. Mercy nurses care for the community with compassion and dignity. Each nursing unit participates in community outreach events. Annual outreach programs are sponsored by the nursing division including food drives, community-need collections such as toiletries for the homeless and diapers for low-income families. Mercy nurses are supported in their mission work around the world and are encouraged to apply for the Mercy Nursing Mission Sponsorship to help offset financial costs of participating in medical missions.
